For your eyes only… this Christmas

The party season is upon us – it’s time to look gorgeously glamorous. Our make-up artist Maryann from Sleeping Beauty in Margaret Street rounds up this season’s hottest trends and gives her expert tips for looking festively fabulous this December.

“The emphasis is very much on the eyes this winter; think bold looks which pack a punch but are still fun and flirty,” enthuses Maryann.

Christmas make-up begins with brows

Statement eyes start with your brows. “No party look is complete without strong brows - they frame your face and provide a strong outline for your make-up,” explains Maryann.

“When using a brow pencil, powder or pomade never start at the inner corner of your brows. Instead, begin ½ cm in and apply the product outwards towards the end of your brow, then softly sweep any leftover product into the first ½ cm for an effortlessly natural effect.”

Maryann’s party eyebrow essentials:

  • Sparse areas? Use a very thin pencil or pomade with an angled brow brush to create tiny hair strokes or try a professional eyebrow tint at Sleeping Beauty.
  • A clear brow gel seals the product and keeps brows tidy.
  • Tidy up the area around the brow with a light concealer for a clean and defined shape.
  • Give yourself a head start pre-Christmas with a professional brow tidy to get those wayward brows into good shape.

Sparkling eyes

Christmas is the perfect time to ramp up the glamour and experiment with fun seasonal trends.

Maryann says, “I love glittery eye shadows, so simple yet so effective, instantly giving a party feel to your make-up. If total glitter is a step too far try applying a dab to the inner corners or experiment with a glitter eyeliner - add it to black winged eyeliner or use it simply on its own for a touch of sparkle. I love the one by Mii Cosmetics - stunning but still subtle.”

Prefer a more sultry look? Try a smoky eye with a twist. “My clients sometimes find the traditional smoky eye a little heavy, so this year I’m giving it a twist using warm browns and chic cranberry shades from the Mii Cosmetics collection,” explains Maryann. “It’s striking, but not overpowering and the warmth is perfect for this time of year. Add extra long, black lashes for that WOW factor.”

Flirty fluttering lashes

Lashes are IN this year.

“I’m seeing a real shift at the moment in the types of lashes my clients want. In the past they would be happy with simple strip lashes but now it’s a more tailored approach. My clients expect length, thickness and gorgeous volume with a natural-looking finish - only Novalash lets me achieve this,” explains Maryann.

Novalash state-of-the-art lash extensions enhance, define and thicken your natural lashes. Each lash is individually bonded to a natural lash with a physician-formulated and medical grade adhesive making them completely safe and comfortable. Plus they are waterproof, oil proof, long-lasting and require little maintenance or downtime.

Maryann continues, “My clients find Novalash extensions so easy and wearable. They also love that they can be tailored in length and thickness - you choose the effect you want, be it subtly sexy or full, fluttery and fabulous.”

Maryann’s top festive make-up tips:

  • Always start with your eyes as this will prevent any falling eye shadow pigments from spoiling your foundation.
  • Eye shadow primer is your best friend; it gives a smooth base, helps eye shadow last longer and really makes the colour pop.
